Stephen > I captured this Bewick's Wren just as it moved onto this clear perch. It didn't stay long and never really gave me a good look at its face, but I like the pose. Midlothian, Texas, January 2010
Stephen > This is a typical setting for Bewick's wrens, thick in the underbrush. Midlothian, Texas, January 2010
Stephen > I always seem to catch these wrens singing more in January through April. I suppose they are setting up territory and calling for mates. Midlothian, Texas, January 2010
Stephen > This time of year I can really hear the males calling with their song. Midlothian, Texas, January 2010
Stephen > The bewick's wren was calling and basically having a fit as one of its young had just emerged from the nest. I suppose this one and the other adult were calling trying to distract attention from it. Midlothian, Texas, May 2009
Stephen > High in a dead tree, this Bewick's wren was about to belt out a song. Midlothian, Texas, March 2009
Stephen > The bewick's wrens around my house are getting more active again. It is nearing that time of year when they start looking for a mate. Here I photographed it on a crepe mrytle. Midlothian, Texas, February 2009
Stephen > This cactus wren, the largest of the wrens in the United States, paid me a quick visit at blind #1 at the Martin Refuge. It only stayed a few seconds and then it flew back into the brush. Edinburg, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > This male carolina wren was proudly proclaiming its territory or announcing itself to the females in the area. I'm not sure which. Anyhow, this shot shows its beak wide open belting out the tune. It is a tad soft as I was using AV mode set at F8. I was worried about the harsh sunset light on the back of the bird. My camera metered the light and shadows in such a way that it gave me a shutter speed of only 1/80 for this shot so with the movement it came out softer than I would like, but the image is workable. Midlothian, Texas, April 2008.
