Stephen > The smallest of the American falcons, the American Kestrel is such a nimble flier. Unfortunately, they are also extremely shy and skittish. I have a tough time photographing them, but this one allowed three clicks of my camera before flying away. I like the look over the shoulder and the slightly spread tail feathers. Midlothian, Texas, February 2010
Stephen > It sure would be nice to find one of these on a nice sunny day. This seems to be my cloudy/rainy, frigid temps raptor. :-) Raisin (in between Refugio and Victoria), Texas, December 2008
Stephen > It's not too often that a red tailed hawk will pay a visit to my yard but today it did. I still had to use my 500mm + TC to get enough reach. Midlothian, Texas, September 2009
Stephen > This red tailed hawk was buzzing my head as I was hunting for painted bunting on this nice May afternoon. Midlothian, Texas, May 2009
Stephen > I came up on this red tailed hawk slowly in my vehicle as I had seen it from a distance. It is also a place where I can usually find one perching. The trick is to actually be able to take a shot. No sooner had I lifted my camera that it crouched getting ready to leap which it did. The next frames were just talons and tail feathers. I still like the crouching pose though. Near Midlothian, Texas, January 2010
Stephen > This Red Shouldered Hawk was found in its habitat in a very wooded area of Huffman, Texas but curiously enough the wooded area is also a large subdivision. Basically these red shouldered hawks and people share these old growth pine woods. Although, as evident from the photograph, large oaks and sycamores are in this wooded area as well. I wish the day had better light, but it was cloudy and had been raining. Huffman, Texas, December 2009
Stephen > Close-up of a red shouldered hawk sitting on utility line. I have this aversion for bird images on utility lines. I much prefer natural perches so I cropped it a bit to focus more on the face and eyes. This was photographed in Huffman, Texas (NW Houston). December 2009
