Stephen > I seem to only find white tailed hawks when the weather is cloudy. I spied this one perched calmly on this old fence post. I so wished I could have gently reached out to pull down those tall grasses, but of course I couldn't. I did appreciate that this hawk was relatively comfortable with my approach. Although I had to use my truck as a blind. The second I stepped out, it became quite nervous and flew away. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is in the background. Near Tivoli, Texas, January 2009
Stephen > One of my favorite areas of Texas to visit for birding is the Rockport-Fulton, Texas area on the Texas Central Coast. While passing by the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge on my way to Rockport, I spotted this crested caracara. It was eating some carrion in the grass, but when I stopped for pictures it flew to this post. It was very skittish and only allowed a few snaps. As I drove off, I saw it fly back to the carrion. Stephen > This small family group of whooping cranes allowed me to approach rather closely as they felt relatively protected by the confines of this small cove in which they were foraging for food. The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge is just beyond the tall grasses that are in the background. Near Rockport, Texas, January 2009
Stephen > "Dad, are you finding anything under there?" This pair, a male adult whooping crane, I think, and a juvenile, was looking for lunch around midday in a small cove near the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. I was crouching in the water and mud just inside this cove. Matagorda Island was the largest island to my back. Near Rockport, Texas, January 2009
Stephen > A trio of whooping cranes feeding in a quiet cove along the Texas Intracoastal Highway near Aransas NWR. I was laying down on my stomach on a berm that bordered this cove. Near Rockport, Texas, January 2009
Stephen > This is one of the many great blue herons that I saw at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. This particular one was one of the few that actually stayed put long enough for a photo. Near Rockport, Texas, January 2009
Stephen > This juvenile whooping crane was really digging in the mud, as was its parent, searching for crustaceans primarily or if it got lucky, a blue crab. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, near Rockport, Texas, January 2009
Stephen > Strolling through the mudflats keeping a watchful eye out for its young which was just behind it and walking toward this adult. Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, Near Rockport, Texas, January 2009
