Birds > Stephen  > Animals > Game Birds and Doves
This is a gallery featuring mostly what one would call game birds. I have quite a few doves in this gallery. Doves tend to be overlooked as they are so common and many times frustrate people as they overwhelm feeders, other birds and are quite messy especially in the city parks. However, if you find them in a more natural environment they are actually quite photogenic.

Stephen > This photo shows an adult plain chachalaca in some weird light. It was very bright and sunny on this day at the Javelina Ranch, but this image was taken just as the sun passed behind some low clouds coming in off of the coast. I did like the perch so I took the shot. Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > Keeping to the shadows and thick brush, this plain chachalaca emerges only temporarily to check out the surroundings and make sure all is safe. Javelina Ranch, Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > This is just one of the 4 or 5 chicks I saw while visiting the Javelina Ranch. Peñitas, Texas, June 2009

Stephen > By the time I made it over to Quinta Matzalan in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, it was almost midday and very bright. However I was able to find this adult chachalaca and chick in the shade. Mission, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > Plain Chachalaca that I photographed in the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge near Rio Hondo, Texas, June 2007. After running across the trail and letting me take a few pictures, it scurried into the brush where its mate was waiting.

Stephen > The light was a bit harsh, but up close these doves with the mournful calls are quite photogenic. Cedar Creek Preserve, Garland, Texas, November 2009
