Birds > Stephen  > Animals > Blackbirds, jays, crows and meadowlarks
The jays are probably my favorite from this family along with the meadowlarks but they are no where near as numerous and they are also camera shy, at least the ones in my area. The scrub jays seem much less camera shy than the blue jays. All jays are aggressive, which puts off some people, but I think they are very photogenic. Obviously, the grackles are extremely abundant, both the great tailed and common variety. The red winged blackbird, which comes in high numbers in many parts of the United States, while present, does not appear in large numbers in my area of North Texas.

Stephen > I found this green jay hanging out in the thick underbrush near the Martin's house at the Martin Refuge. I had to use a flash to try to bring the color out as this one was quite shaded in this bush. It certainly is not the best photo, but it stays. Edinburg, Texas, June 2008

Stephen > Time for a bath but first this Bullock's oriole needed to scare away as many of the songbirds that were present as well. Javelina Ranch, Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > This Bullock's Oriole momentarily stopped and perched on this snag in a small pond at the Weaver Ranch. It was there long enough just for three frames. It quickly flew off right after this frame. Raymondville, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > Tight perch....actually for the purpose of full disclosure I cloned out an orange that was stuck on the short branch to the left. This Bullock's oriole would not perch where it was supposed on the separate small stick and branch to the right. Weaver Ranch, Raymondville, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > These two, a blue grosbeak and Bullock's oriole, seemed to be exchanging a few words at the old watering hole on the Javelina Ranch. Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > This is certainly one of the more common birds in the United States. This male still has a certain amount of charm. Javelina Ranch, Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
