Birds > Stephen  > Animals > Blackbirds, jays, crows and meadowlarks
The jays are probably my favorite from this family along with the meadowlarks but they are no where near as numerous and they are also camera shy, at least the ones in my area. The scrub jays seem much less camera shy than the blue jays. All jays are aggressive, which puts off some people, but I think they are very photogenic. Obviously, the grackles are extremely abundant, both the great tailed and common variety. The red winged blackbird, which comes in high numbers in many parts of the United States, while present, does not appear in large numbers in my area of North Texas.

Stephen > This perch was near one of the feeders at the Fennessey Ranch. The green jays only stopped momentarily here before dive bombing the tray feeder picking up corn and assorted seed. Near Bayside, Texas, December 2008
Stephen > Here is another green jay waiting on a perch near the feeders. The seed and nuts were very popular on this cold, cloudy day that I visited the Fennessey Ranch. Near Refugio, Texas, December 2008
Stephen > I like the slight turn of the head in this image. Several times the green jays would perch and slightly turn their heads as if they were laying their heads down on a pillow while investigating the activity at the feeding station. Fennessey Ranch, Near Refugio, Texas, December 2008
Stephen > Still another image of one of the few clear perches I was able to get at the end of the day from the many green jays at the Martin Refuge. These jays really preferred to stay in the shade most of the day rarely venturing out into the open and when they did venture, they never did so for a long enough time to get a clear image it seemed. However, I was happy at the end of the day when this one finally perched nicely for me. Edinburg, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > This is another nice perch from one of the many green jays I saw while on my trip to the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Like other jays they are boisterous birds, but smaller than most jays and do not seem as aggressive. Martin Refuge, Edinburg, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > One of the last perches I was able to get of this obliging green jay. It was late afternoon thus the rather harsh light, but I still like the fact that I was able to put the whole bird in the frame. Edinburg, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > It was definitely warm when I visited the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge and this green jay just wanted to cool off. It bathed in the water of the feeding station near the Visitor's Center for a few seconds. I caught this image as it was drying itself shaking its feathers. I used flash for fill since the light was dappled and not very strong by this water feature. Near Rio Hondo, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > Many of the green jays at this feeding station just began to forage on the ground as the actual feeding station became very crowded. This one walked very close to where I was standing. Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, near Rio Hondo, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > Another green jay from the feeding station near the Visitor's Center at Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. On this day, I probably counted more than twenty green jays in this area within the span of a hour. Near Rio Hondo, Texas, June 2008
I like the slight turn of the head in this image. Several times the green jays would perch and slightly turn their heads as if they were laying their heads down on a pillow while investigating the activity at the feeding station. Fennessey Ranch, Near Refugio, Texas, December 2008
