Birds > Stephen  > Animals > Cardinals, buntings and allies
Some of the prettiest birds in my area. The cardinals all have bright, vivid colors and beautiful songs. Many are spring and summer visitors while the cardinals are here in my area all year.

Stephen > This very skittish male northern cardinal would not allow me to get close but for some reason it calmed down while perched on this barbed wire fence. It probably felt a bit safer because it was under quite a bit of foliage as one can tell from the low light. It was actually pretty bright outside but this guy made me take a shot of him in the shadows. Midlothian, Texas, March 2008.
Stephen > This male northern cardinal had just given the fledgeling a morsel to eat. I unfortunately could not capture the "pass" from one beak to another, but in this photo, it almost looks like the father is smugly grinning at his young. Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, Glen Rose, Texas, July 2007.
Stephen > I went out birding with the intention of finding a male eastern meadowlark singing on something natural. I did find meadowlarks but I couldn't get a good shot of one. However, I found a singing male dickcissel who obliged me quite nicely. The perch is not exactly natural but I like the rustic look of barbed wire perches. It was competing with quite a few other males in the area and not only was trying to outsing its fellow dickcissels but it also was trying to outdo the other meadowlarks in the area. Midlothian, Texas, April 2008.
Stephen > Yet another dickcissel belting out the tunes. There were some nice wildflowers in the background of this picture. Near Midlothian, Texas, April 2008.
Stephen > I am continuing to enjoy the beautiful singing of the dickcissels this spring. The males are quite active singing in at least one certain field in particular although I have seen them all over my hometown. I caught this male dickcissel late in the evening. Midlothian, Texas, April 2008.
Stephen > I have been returning to the same field for the past few days now observing the dickcissels feed, sing and chase each other as territories are established in this field. Near Midlothian, Texas, April 2008.
Stephen > I caught this dickcissel in some nice light but it was very windy and this male was having trouble keeping his perch and singing at the same time it seemed. Midlothian, Texas, May 2008
Stephen > One of the many dickcissels that are singing loudly this spring in my hometown. I found this one singing in a field with high grasses and a mixture of juniper and live oak trees. Midlothian, Texas, April 2008.
Stephen > Another dickcissel singing loudly at mid-morning. Midlothian, Texas, May 2008.
