Some of the prettiest birds in my area. The cardinals all have bright, vivid colors and beautiful songs. Many are spring and summer visitors while the cardinals are here in my area all year.

Stephen > I heard this little guy calling in the evening. Since the light was pretty nice and this cardinal didn't seem to mind my relatively close approach, I decided to take a few clicks with my camera. Midlothian, Texas, March 2008.
Stephen > This cardinal was singing very loudly as it perched in my backyard, Midlothian, Texas. July 2007.
Stephen > This very skittish male northern cardinal would not allow me to get close but for some reason it calmed down while perched on this barbed wire fence. It probably felt a bit safer because it was under quite a bit of foliage as one can tell from the low light. It was actually pretty bright outside but this guy made me take a shot of him in the shadows. Midlothian, Texas, March 2008.
Stephen > This male northern cardinal had just given the fledgeling a morsel to eat. I unfortunately could not capture the "pass" from one beak to another, but in this photo, it almost looks like the father is smugly grinning at his young. Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, Glen Rose, Texas, July 2007.
Stephen > I like this perch because it shows off the olive plumage that this female painted bunting has. The wind also seems to be blowing some of its head plumage up. Martin Refuge, Edinburg, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > Toward the end of my day shooting at the Martin Refuge in Edinburg, Texas, I was able to take a photograph of this rather nice perch from what I thought was another olive sparrow, but it actually was female painted bunting that had come in for some water. June 2008
Stephen > For about a minute or so, this painted bunting flew in from under some brush and landed on a lily pad at a water feature at the Martin Refuge. It was definitely looking to cool off and get a few drinks of water. Edinburg, Texas, June 2008

Stephen > Honestly, I do not remember if this female painted bunting was calling or not. I think its mouth was open just to cool off. I'm not even sure if birds do that. I like the surrounding lily pads. They add color to this rather drab female. Martin Refuge, Edinburg, Texas, June 2008
