Birds > Stephen  > Animals > Cardinals, buntings and allies
Some of the prettiest birds in my area. The cardinals all have bright, vivid colors and beautiful songs. Many are spring and summer visitors while the cardinals are here in my area all year.

Stephen > This is but one of the dozens of cardinals that I saw while visiting the Fennessey Ranch on the Central Texas Coast. Near Refugio, Texas, December 2008
Stephen > Late in the day, this male northern cardinal came by to get some water at one of the watering areas at the Martin Refuge. I like the expression he has. Edinburg, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > Male Northern Cardinal, San Antonio, Texas, June 2007.
Stephen > This is an image of one of two pyrrhuloxia that I saw on the Martin Refuge. Additionally, this is the only one that would come out of the shadows. Edinburg, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > This male pyrrhuloxia just would not come out from the shadows so this is the best representative of the gender I have for this species. You can see how difficult the light was with most of the body in the shadows, but with bright sun hitting part of the chest. Still though there is some fine detail in the plumage and I like the crest. Martin Refuge, Edinburg, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > This male cardinal seems to have lost a few tail feathers either from a fight with another cardinal or a close call with a cat. Midlothian, Texas, April 2009
Stephen > I seem to be receiving the "look" from this female cardinal. I suppose she wanted to forage for seeds in peace. Midlothian, Texas, April 2009.
Stephen > This is an early morning image of a northern cardinal foraging near a feeding station at Los Madrones Ranch near Dripping Springs, Texas, April 2008.
Stephen > I got lucky with this photo. I had been chasing various birds including the male cardinal, but it just would not let me get close, but I did find this less skittish female cardinal. I had to photograph through some branches but I think the image turned out relatively well. Midlothian, Texas, March 2008.
