Birds > Stephen  > Animals > Cardinals, buntings and allies
Some of the prettiest birds in my area. The cardinals all have bright, vivid colors and beautiful songs. Many are spring and summer visitors while the cardinals are here in my area all year.

Stephen > Male Northern Cardinal, San Antonio, Texas, June 2007.
Stephen > I got lucky with this photo. I had been chasing various birds including the male cardinal, but it just would not let me get close, but I did find less skittish female cardinal. I had to photograph through some branches but I think the image turned out relatively well. Midlothian, Texas, March 2008.
Stephen > While out birding in my town, I found this cardinal high in a tree. I believe it is a juvenile but I could be wrong. I could not acheive a clear shot, but the light was nice and I like the color of the cardinal so I tried to get the cleanest image possible. Midlothian, Texas, March 2008.
Stephen > I heard this little guy calling in the evening. Since the light was pretty nice and this cardinal didn't seem to mind my relatively close approach, I decided to take a few clicks with my camera. Midlothian, Texas, March 2008.
Stephen > This cardinal was singing very loudly as it perched in my backyard, Midlothian, Texas. July 2007.
Stephen > This very skittish male northern cardinal would not allow me to get close but for some reason it calmed down while perched on this barbed wire fence. It probably felt a bit safer because it was under quite a bit of foliage as one can tell from the low light. It was actually pretty bright outside but this guy made me take a shot of him in the shadows. Midlothian, Texas, March 2008.
Stephen > This male northern cardinal had just given the fledgeling a morsel to eat. I unfortunately could not capture the "pass" from one beak to another, but in this photo, it almost looks like the father is smugly grinning at his young. Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, Glen Rose, Texas, July 2007.
Stephen > I so wanted to find this painted bunting on a good perch but the cut grass from a recently cut field was just too easy to get eat. This painted bunting practically ignored me as it just ate and ate and ate. You can see it grabbing the freshly cut seeds from the flowering grass or weed. I am not sure what it is, but this painted bunting enjoyed it and I enjoyed watching him. Midlothian, Texas, April 2008.
Stephen > I am sure that this painted bunting must have been looking back at all the noise the scissor tailed flycatchers were making trying to outsing and battle each other for territory. Meanwhile, this painted bunting just kept eating the seeds. If you look carefully, a seed is falling past his beak. Midlothian, Texas, April 2008.
