Birds > Stephen  > Animals > Hummingbirds
These are hummingbirds from primarily my backyard but there are a few from other parts of Texas as well. They are all ruby throated hummingbirds with just a few images of a black-chinned hummingbird and a buff-bellied hummingbird.

Stephen > This is another quick shot of a ruby throated hummingibrd working its way around this Rocket Larkspur. Midlothian, Texas, May 2009
Stephen > At first, I really wasn't thrilled about capturing the back of this ruby throated hummingbird as it sipped on nectar from a flower in front of it, but the more I looked at this, the more I liked the position of the wings as they seemed to be making that figure 8 pattern that they do as they quickly beat. The iridescent green line down the back also is pleasing to me. This hummingbird caught me by surprise as my family and I walked through the zoo. Dallas Zoo, Dallas, Texas, August 2008
Stephen > This is another odd crop, but I like the dorsal view plus you can just see its beak going into the flower. Midlothian, Texas, August 2009
Stephen > This is another image of a ruby throated hummingbird trying to get some nectar from a lantana plant. The day was cloudy and I was using a flash but this is another photo that I took without giving my flash enough time to recycle so I had to rely on RAW processing to adjust the exposure. Midlothian, Texas, August 2008
Stephen > Well, I was really trying to get a good picture of this ruby throated hummingbird taking a bit of nectar. In the all time I was tracking this hummingbird, my flash only fired twice as my batteries were low and it took it forever to recycle. As my (bad) luck would have it, the wing positioning here covered the hummingbird's head. However, I still like the image. It has nice color and the beak is stuck directly in the flower. Dallas Zoo, Dallas, Texas, August 2008
Stephen > Coming in for some sugar water at one of my feeders. He is very protective of "his" feeder. Midlothian, Texas, August 2009
Stephen > The resident male for my yard this year who is quite protective of "his" area; however, for whatever reason he has been chased away by a very aggressive immature male. On this today, the aggressive immature male was not around. He was lucky. Midlothian, Texas, August 2009
Stephen > This is the resident male ruby throated hummingbird protecting his area, a willow tree with one feeder and tons of flowers around it. Midlothian, Texas, August 2009
Stephen > So far this is the lone adult male ruby throated hummingbird that has come to stake its claim to my yard during this year's migration. It is fending off other immature males and even a few females. Midlothian, Texas, August 2009
