Birds > Stephen  > Animals > Hummingbirds
These are hummingbirds from primarily my backyard but there are a few from other parts of Texas as well. They are all ruby throated hummingbirds with just a few images of a black-chinned hummingbird and a buff-bellied hummingbird.

Stephen > I did something a bit different with this image. I had been using for almost all of my flight shots, a very high shutter speed and large lens aperture. With this one, my aperture was still pretty large, but not as much, and I slowed the shutter speed down to I think 1/500. In this way, the wings really just became the blur you see. I like the effect. It's a nice contrast to the other images where I have tried to stop the wings in motion. This particular one was busy fighting for its place in the sacred twisted willow. Midlothian, Texas, September 2008
Stephen > I captured this ruby throated hummingbird as it buzzed near me and the feeders in my backyard. Midlothian, Texas, August 2008
Stephen > This is an image of a juvenile male ruby throated hummingbird as it prepares to head to the feeder while at the same time keeping an eye out for its nemesis. I like the way the wings in this image just seem to slice right through the air. Midlothian, Texas, September 2008
Stephen > Another flight shot from the 2008 migration south. This ruby throated hummingbird was very wary of what was going on around it and only stand about a minute at the feeder. Midlothian, Texas, August 2008
Stephen > It was nice to finally catch a male showing its ruby red gorget this evening. Midlothian, Texas, August 2008
Stephen > I liked the slightly leaning mid-air position of this male ruby throated hummingbird. It was near one of my feeders in the favorite tree of the hummingbirds this year, my twisted willow tree. Midlothian, Texas, August 2008
Stephen > This male ruby throated hummingbird was hovering just by a feeder and above some flowering plants before diving in for a drink of nectar. Midlothian, Texas, August 2008
Stephen > Trying to decide if he liked lantana, a morning glory or hyacinth bean, this male ruby throated hummingbird prepares to drink some nice nectar. By the way, he chose the lantana. Midlothian, Texas, August 2008
Stephen > Almost ready to go in to one of the feeding ports, this male ruby throated hummingbird heads downward beating its wings furiously to hold itself steady. Midlothian, Texas, August 2008
