Stephen > This was one of the few times I could capture a golden cheeked warbler on somewhat of a clear perch. This one was feeding on the seeds that you see and, in fact, if you look closely below the beak of the bird, you can see a seed falling. Los Madrones Ranch, Dripping Springs, Texas, April 2008.
Stephen > Another view of the female golden cheeked warbler feeding on seeds. Los Madrones Ranch, Dripping Springs, Texas, April 2008
Stephen > I feel very lucky to have been able to find the golden cheeked warbler on my visit to Los Madrones Ranch. This is a female feeding on the seeds of this tree. Dripping Springs, Texas, April 2008.
Stephen > I caught this golden cheeked warbler as it was about to fly to another branch after feeding a bit where it was. Los Madrones Ranch, Dripping Springs, Texas, April 2008.
Stephen > This is my first usable picture of the rare and scarce Golden Cheeked Warbler that I found at the Los Madrones Ranch near Dripping Springs, Texas in April of 2008. I sort of threaded the needle so to speak as this warbler was high in the treetop foraging for seeds and insects. There were many branches and leaves around this warbler as one can see but this image is relatively clear. I had to use a flash to illuminate the warbler since the shaded and dappled light caused the warbler to appear very dark.
Stephen > Well, what can I say? When I visited Los Madrones Ranch in Dripping Springs, Texas, this was my target bird so I need to be satisfied with this picture although I am somewhat disappointed in that I could not coax this male golden cheeked warbler out into the open. He stayed deep in the juniper and oak trees. He seemed more worried about a male cardinal encroaching on his territory. This is not a National Geographic shot by any means, but it is a nice head shot of a very rare and endangered bird and for that I am grateful. April 2008.
Stephen > The golden cheeked warblers, especially the male surprisingly enough, were very shy when I visited Los Madrones Ranch. This is a typical view of how I observed the male on this visit. He was hidden in the leaves feeding on the caterpillars and other insects he could find. Los Madrones Ranch, Dripping Springs, Texas, April 2008.
Stephen > Admittedly this is an image of a Golden Cheeked Warbler that is bit too soft for my liking but I look at this image as more of a behavioral image as it had just snagged a caterpillar from one of the branches as it fed high in the trees. Los Madrones Ranch, Dripping Springs, Texas, April 2008.
Stephen > During a visit to my father's-in-law house, I found a multitude of pine warblers foraging on the ground. This is a first year adult that has not quite obtained the true colors of a pine warbler. Huffman, Texas, February 2009
