Birds > Stephen  > Animals > Falcons, Hawks, Kites, Eagles and Vultures
This is simply a collection of different raptors that I have photographed from in and around my local area and the state of Texas. I had never really realized that there were so many different birds of prey in Texas ranging from the small American Kestrel to the Bald Eagle.

Stephen > This is another male American Kestrel that I found at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge taking issue with my lens. The skies were continuing to play havoc with me. It was difficult to obtain a proper exposure. Near Austwell, Texas, November 2007.
Stephen > American Kestrel perched on its favorite urban perch, a powerline! Midlothian, April 2007.
Stephen > I found this Swainson's hawk surveying a large pasture undoubtedly looking for an unlucky vole, rabbit or snake that it could have for dinner. Midlothian, Texas, April 2009
Stephen > I was on my way to work when I spotted this red tailed hawk in a tree. The light was still very low so I decided to go for the silhouette look because I had no prayer of getting detail in the shot with such low light. Irving, Texas, September 2007.
Stephen > I came up on this red tailed hawk slowly in my vehicle as I had seen it from a distance. It is also a place where I can usually find one perching. The trick is to actually be able to take a shot. No sooner had I lifted my camera that it crouched getting ready to leap which it did. The next frames were just talons and tail feathers. I still like the crouching pose though. Near Midlothian, Texas, January 2010
Stephen > Red Tailed Hawk caught perching in Grand Prairie, Texas. She allowed me to get very close because she was fixated on some prey below her I believe, Feb. 2007.
Stephen > This red tailed hawk had just finished eating something on the ground when it flew up to this perch. I took this picture right at sunset. Midlothian, January 2009
Stephen > I have found this hawk and one other that seem to have staked out this area of my hometown. I believe it is a female and male pair. Anyhow, this one, the female I think, was deep in a wooded area but I found a relatively clean view of her for a few frames. Midlothian, Texas, January 2009
Stephen > For the second year in row I have found a red tailed hawk using this dead tree as a perch. I also drive through this area quite often with my camera so you would think they hawks and other birds would get used to me. This is not the case. Within four shutter clicks, it took off. Just outside Midlothian, Texas, January 2009
