Birds > Stephen  > Animals > Falcons, Hawks, Kites, Eagles and Vultures
This is simply a collection of different raptors that I have photographed from in and around my local area and the state of Texas. I had never really realized that there were so many different birds of prey in Texas ranging from the small American Kestrel to the Bald Eagle.

Stephen > I was surprised to find two red-shouldered hawks together. Most hawks seem to be such solitary creatures except for breeding and nesting time. At any rate, I felt fortunate to find these two together. I am assuming the larger hawk to the left is the female and the smaller one to the right is the male. The female would not turn around for the longest but finally did. Plus she turned her head while the male was looking back as well. I wish the morning light hadn't been so harsh. This was the only angle I could get on them though. I would have had to walk under them to photograph them from the other side. I am sure both would have flown away by then. Huffman, Texas, January 2009
Stephen > I saw many red-shouldered hawks while visiting family near Houston. These hawks seem to prefer denser, wooded areas like the Cooper's hawks or Sharp-Shinned hawks. This one was in harsh morning light with the sun slightly to its back causing some shadows in front. Huffman, Texas, January 2009

Stephen > This red shouldered hawk had been perched on a utility line overlooking a small ditch with water in it. As I slowly passed in my vehicle, it flew to the other side of the road and perched in this tree. The perch is better but the light was much more harsh. This is a male because its larger female mate is just out of the frame. Huffman, Texas, January 2009
Stephen > The American Kestrel is very common but for me it is difficult to photograph as they are so shy. This kestrel was not that close to me, but it was in nice light and perched on something other than a utility wire. Midlothian, Texas, Jan 2009
Stephen > The smallest of the American falcons, the American Kestrel is such a nimble flier. Unfortunately, they are also extremely shy and skittish. I have a tough time photographing them, but this one allowed three clicks of my camera before flying away. I like the look over the shoulder and the slightly spread tail feathers. Midlothian, Texas, February 2010
Stephen > American Kestrel from Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, November 2007
Stephen > This is a male American Kestrel I found at the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, near Austwell, Texas, November 2007.
