Stephen > The various ponds around the Las Colinas area just west of Dallas are known to play host to a nice variety of ducks during migration and winter. Here I found a male hooded merganser at sunset. Irving, Texas, November 2008
Stephen > The mergansers at a pond in the Las Colinas area of Irving were quite skittish. After taking a few images of this one, it quickly took flight to avoid my prying lens. Irving, Texas, November 2008
Stephen > These two hooded mergansers were rarely apart at this small pond in the Las Colinas area. Irving, Texas, November 2008
Stephen > I tried to isolate the female hooded merganser here, but it was quite difficult. She stayed close to her mate. The male is doing a quick head spin it looks like. You can also see how much smaller these hooded mergansers are compared to the other duck in the background. Las Colinas (Irving), Texas, November 2008
Stephen > Trying for a lower perspective, I squatted almost slipping into the water to get this shot. Las Colinas ponds, Irving, Texas, November 2008
Stephen > Here are two of the canvasbacks that are wintering in some of the Las Colinas area ponds. I found these two relatively isolated from the rest. The end of the day light gives the water a nice golden hue. I used my flash for fill too. Irving, Texas, November 2008
Stephen > This is yet another image of the many canvasbacks I observed in this one locale. Here the light was actually low, but there was one part of the pond that still had strong light. I started taking pictures as the different ducks entered this one area. Las Colinas ponds, Irving, Texas, November 2008
Stephen > In this image I was able to include a nice view of two ducks, the lesser scaup on the left and the canvasback on the right. Las Colinas Ponds, Irving, Texas, November 2008
Stephen > This is but one of the handsome canvasbacks I saw at these ponds in the Las Colinas area. Irving, Texas, November 2008
