Some of the prettiest birds in my area. The cardinals all have bright, vivid colors and beautiful songs. The cousin of the cardinal, the pyrrhuloxia, is equally as colorful and of course the buntings and grosbeaks look like they had paint spilled on them. Many are spring and summer visitors while the cardinals are here in my area all year.

Stephen > I am certainly not accustomed to seeing a pyrrhuloxia on the ground like this, but that is what this brightly colored male did as it approached the water feature at the windmill blind on the Javelina Ranch. Peñitas, Texas, June 2009

Stephen > This male pyrrhuloxia, (That's right. You heard me, py-rrhu-loxia :-) ) came into to get some water at one of the smaller water areas at the Javelina Ranch. It was a fast mover, but I was able to get this frame with which I am relatively happy. Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > This male pyrrhuloxia just would not come out from the shadows so this is the best I could do on this visit to the Martin Refuge. You can see how difficult the light was with most of the body in the shadows, but with bright sun hitting part of the chest. Stephen > I was surprised when this northern cardinal almost flew into the blind from which I was photographing the birds and other animals that came to this area. Cardinals are very common but the males are just so striking, I never get tired of them. Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
