Birds > Stephen  > Animals > Cardinals, Pyrrhuloxias, Buntings, Grosbeaks, Dickcissels and Tanagers
Some of the prettiest birds in my area. The cardinals all have bright, vivid colors and beautiful songs. The cousin of the cardinal, the pyrrhuloxia, is equally as colorful and of course the buntings and grosbeaks look like they had paint spilled on them. Many are spring and summer visitors while the cardinals are here in my area all year.

Stephen > Looking around before getting a drink a water, a female painted bunting enjoys the scenery offered by those lily pads. Martin Refuge, Edinburg, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > Honestly, I do not remember if this female painted bunting was calling or not. I think its mouth was open just to cool off. I'm not even sure if birds do that. I like the surrounding lily pads. They add color to this rather drab female. Martin Refuge, Edinburg, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > As has been my luck lately, the light was because of overcast skies, but I tried to pull this male painted bunting out from the leaves in this tree. They are very shy and quick to move when they notice movement. I love it when they come back for the summers here in my area. Midlothian, Texas, May 2009
Stephen > I caught this painted bunting perching high in a tree after chasing its mate around for a bit. I am still trying to get closer to these fast and shy birds but it is oh so difficult. At least the light was better here than it had been lately. Midlothian, Texas, May 2009
Stephen > Still preferring the shadows and cover of the branches, I was just able to find this painted bunting in an open area. Midlothian, Texas, May 2009
Stephen > Finally, the painted bunting perches in the sun. For the past few days as I have been tracking this male down, it has stayed low in the high grasses or in the shadows deep in the cover of leaves and branches. Now if it would just let me get closer. Midlothian, Texas, May 2009
Stephen > Busy picture, but this painted bunting finally stopped for a few seconds so I could grab a few frames. I tried approaching more closely, but as usual, it took off deep into the wooded area just out of frame.

Stephen > On this occasion, this painted bunting would not move from the shadows even though the light was nice just a few feet away. I had to bump up the ISO, stop up and do some work in Photoshop to bring the colors out. Midlothian, Texas, May 2009
