Birds > Stephen  > Animals > Cardinals, Pyrrhuloxias, Buntings, Grosbeaks, Dickcissels and Tanagers
Some of the prettiest birds in my area. The cardinals all have bright, vivid colors and beautiful songs. The cousin of the cardinal, the pyrrhuloxia, is equally as colorful and of course the buntings and grosbeaks look like they had paint spilled on them. Many are spring and summer visitors while the cardinals are here in my area all year.

Stephen > Turning a bit from his original pose, he looks toward the water. Will he finally decide to go for a dip? Javelina Ranch, Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > This is the moment I was waiting for while visiting this blind at the Javelina Ranch. I was hoping to achieve some rather close images of a painted bunting and even better with nice surrounding habitat like this small stream. I still can not believe how vivid the colors are on his plumage. Peñitas, Texas, June 2009

Stephen > I like this perch because it shows off the olive plumage that this female painted bunting has. The wind also seems to be blowing some of its head plumage up. Martin Refuge, Edinburg, Texas, June 2008
Stephen > Toward the end of my day shooting at the Martin Refuge in Edinburg, Texas, I was able to take a photograph of this rather nice perch from what I thought was another olive sparrow, but it actually was a female painted bunting that had come in for some water. June 2008
Stephen > For about a minute or so, this painted bunting flew in from under some brush and landed on a lily pad at a water feature at the Martin Refuge. It was definitely looking to cool off and get a few drinks of water. Edinburg, Texas, June 2008
