Birds > Stephen  > Animals > Cardinals, Pyrrhuloxias, Buntings, Grosbeaks, Dickcissels and Tanagers
Some of the prettiest birds in my area. The cardinals all have bright, vivid colors and beautiful songs. The cousin of the cardinal, the pyrrhuloxia, is equally as colorful and of course the buntings and grosbeaks look like they had paint spilled on them. Many are spring and summer visitors while the cardinals are here in my area all year.

Stephen > If there were ever a bird that resembles what a bird would look like if it rolled around on a painter's palette, it would be the painted bunting. I caught this thirsty and hot one at the Javelina Ranch. Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > This painted bunting overcame its shyness to come to this small stream to cool off in its water. Javelina Ranch, Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > The weather was just too hot. This is either a different male painted bunting or the same one that had taken a bath earlier. Either way, the cool water was too much to resist. Javelina Ranch, Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > Splish splash! This male painted bunting takes the plunge! Javelina Ranch, Peñitas, Texas, June 2009.
Stephen > You just have to think that this painted bunting is feeling extremely refreshed after taking a cool dip in this small stream at the Javelina Ranch. Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > Still enjoying the refreshing waters of this small stream created by a an old working windmill that was pumping a steady stream into the resaca nearby, this painted bunting takes its time cooling down on this hot day. Javelina Ranch, Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > The parrot of the songbird world, this wonderfully colorful male painted bunting came in for a few sips of water this one and only time on the day I visited this blind at the Weaver Ranch. Who I assume was his mate, a female painted bunting, came to the water several times during the day, but he was too shy or just not that thirsty. Raymondville, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > For most of my time at this particular blind at the Javelina Ranch this is where the male painted bunting spent of his time; deep in the leaves and branches. Still though, his brilliant color is evident. Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
Stephen > Eventually the heat just got to this male painted bunting and it headed for the water feature at this blind at the Javelina Ranch, but first it took this perch to look around a bit. He was very cautious. Peñitas, Texas, June 2009
